HS2, Old Oak Common
Enabling and Multi Utility Diversion Works

Project Location:
HS2, Old Oak Common
Client Name:
Balfour Beatty (BBVS)
Project Description:
OCU has been awarded multiple diversion packages at Old Oak Common train station, covering water, gas, regulated power and telecoms. These works are key to enabling construction of the station and wider infrastructure. Our teams have successfully managed and coordinated multiple workstreams navigating deep excavations and restricted working zones in a highly congested site.
Located in West London, the station will become a major transport superhub, providing quick and reliable connections from London to the Midlands, North, and Scotland via HS2.
Key Stats:
• Largest Site: 2,500 + workers on site daily
• 14 platforms under construction
4 Years
Duration
Challenge
• Coordinating with multiple stakeholders daily while avoiding delays to OCU’s programme and those connected to our diversions
• Managing deep excavations within restricted working areas
• Delivering multiple utilities for several stakeholders, offering the most efficient solution
• Operating on a site with over 2,500 operatives and hundreds of contractors, with in depth onboarding requirements and limited delivery access
Solution
• OCU uses cost and resource loaded P6 programmes across all major projects and frameworks, which ensures the correct resources are available, onboarded and on site to deliver on time and within budget
• Working closely with our supply chain partner to design bespoke temporary works solutions for each excavation, utilising the expertise of our delivery teams and the latest available equipment
• With NIRS, GIRS and WIRS accreditations and an in-house design team of over 100 engineers, OCU can design and build for multiple utility providers concurrently without delays
• Success on a site requires planning and strong back-office support – something OCU has perfected over 5 years of working on HS2
Outcome
• Originally contracted to divert Thames Water assets of two 30” CI and SI trunk mains and install a shaft on the Barrow Hill main
• Carried out remedial works within the tunnel bore
• Scope expanded due to successful delivery, including electric diversions for UKPN and gas diversions for Cadent
• Also delivering telecoms diversions for Openreach
• Continuing to support HS2 delivery, contributing to the UK’s largest and most complex infrastructure project
