OCU was appointed by Yorkshire Water to deliver a water mains renewal scheme at Foundry Lane, Seacroft, following a history of water quality challenges and repeated burst mains within the local DMA.


The works involved renewing 3.4km of water mains ranging from 90mm to 180mm diameter, together with associated service connections and tie-ins. Delivered through residential carriageways, footpaths and verges, the scheme required careful planning, stakeholder coordination and phased delivery to minimise disruption while improving the reliability of the local

clean water network.

Challenge

  • Delivering the scheme within tight regulatory timescales set by Ofwat

  • Coordinating numerous road closures with the Local Highway Authority across residential areas

  • Managing multiple out-of-hours network shut-offs to minimise interruption to customer supplies

  • Sequencing works around school holidays to reduce disruption to the local community

  •  Working around existing underground services and areas of unstable ground during excavation

Solution

  • Undertook detailed planning and early preparation to meet programme requirements

  • Engaged with the Local Highway Authority to coordinate road closures and traffic management

  • Worked closely with Yorkshire Water operational teams to plan complex network shut offs

  • Liaised with local schools and the council to minimise disruption throughout delivery

  • Utilised HSG47 safe digging techniques and vacuum excavation to safely expose existing underground services

Outcome

  • Successfully completed the scheme one week ahead of the planned beneficial completion date

  • Achieved all stakeholder requirements through effective planning and collaboration

  • Renewed ageing water mains to improve network reliability and water quality
