Duration
Challenge
Early-stage design assessments identified the existing site drainage as insufficient for the planned substation upgrade
Inadequate drainage posed a major construction risk, impacting project timelines and long-term operational performance
The site’s scientific and safety-critical environment demanded meticulous planning and stringent health and safety measures
Works had to be delivered with minimal disruption to existing operations
Solution
Collaborated with SSEN and stakeholders to deliver a site-specific sustainable drainage strategy
Designed and installed a bespoke soakaway system to manage surface water in line with environmental standards
Progressed electrical infrastructure upgrade through multiple coordinated phases, maintaining safety and resilience
Outcome
First phase successfully delivered, replacing and commissioning the initial 132kV transformer
Electrical capacity across the site significantly increased
Ongoing works include substation extension and final transformer installation to support future energy demands
Ensured long-term value for the client and energy security for critical infrastructure
