The works include emergency fault response, business-as-usual circuit provision, planned maintenance and technical support to protect critical communications infrastructure. Delivered by a dedicated operational team, the contract ensures the continued reliability, availability and

resilience of a safety-critical national fibre network.

Key Stats:

  • Over 6,000km of rail-deployed fibre network maintained

  • 44 fibre faults rectified during Year One

  • 24/7 fault response service

  • Safety-critical national infrastructure

1 YEAR

Duration

Challenge

  • Maintaining a safety-critical fibre network across live railway infrastructure

  • Coordinating access to the rail network in collaboration with Network Rail

  • Managing ageing infrastructure containing legacy components

  • Responding to increasing weather-related incidents and third-party damage

  • Delivering emergency fault response while complying with railway fatigue requirements

Solution

  • Transferred an experienced operational team through TUPE to ensure continuity of service

  • Worked closely with the clients outside plant team to assess faults and agree appropriate technical solutions

  • Maintained dedicated in-house safety and standby resources to support compliant 24/7 response

  • Utilised an established supply chain to provide additional specialist resources during major incidents

  • Used OCU's Network Operations Centre (NOC) to manage fault logging, response coordination and fatigue compliance processes

Outcome

  • Achieved Year One service level agreements, including a 12-hour faultrestoration target

  • Successfully delivered major fault repairs, including significant fibre reinstatement works at Berkswell and Seven Sisters

  • Reduced maintenance costs through smarter repair methodologies and lower-impact engineering solutions

  • Integrated rail and highway fibre delivery into a single operational team, improving efficiency and reducing project interfaces

  • Demonstrated OCU's capability to maintain and protect critical communications infrastructure across the UK's rail network
