Brynmoelddu pressurised pipeline system

Project Location:

Brynmoelddu, Powys

Client Name:

Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water

Project Description:

OCU delivered the Brynmoelddu pressurised pipeline renewal scheme for Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, replacing an existing asbestos cement main using pipe bursting and installing 1,120 m of MDPE.

The works formed part of Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water’s wider programme to renew water mains across Wales. Delivered primarily on agricultural land with nearby residential areas and schools, the project demanded vigilant control of legacy materials, careful management of access constraints and proactive engagement with both public and private stakeholders to maintain safety, compliance and continuity of local activity.

Key Stats:

  • 1,120 m of MDPE installed via pipe bursting

  • Existing asbestos cement main replaced as part of a strategic renewal programme

  • Multi-stakeholder delivery across agricultural land with residential and school interfaces managed safely

Duration

Challenge

  • Presence of asbestos cement and pitch fibre required strict controls to prevent disturbance and ensure compliant handling and disposal

  • Sloped agricultural terrain and limited access routes (steep inclines, narrow roads and unmade lanes) constrained plant movements and logistics

  • Surrounding residential properties and schools required clear communication and careful coordination with multiple stakeholders

  • Winter/spring conditions increased the likelihood of severe weather, heightening existing geographical and access risks

  • Buried and overhead utilities, plus nearby livestock, introduced additional safety and operational considerations

Solution

  • Maintained continual risk monitoring through regular audits and site vigilance around legacy materials

  • Planned the works in detail and shared key information with relevant stakeholders, including landowners and public services

  • Managed access and sequencing to suit the terrain, reducing disruption and maintaining safe operations throughout

  • Maintained ongoing awareness and controls around buried and overhead utilities to protect people and existing infrastructure

  • Delivered the programme efficiently within the agreed timeframe, minimising delays and mitigating the impact of adverse weather

Outcome

  • Successfully completed 1,120 m of pipe bursting and MDPE installation to renew the pressurised main

  • Achieved compliant handling and disposal of disturbed asbestos cement and pitch fibre materials in line with HSE requirements

  • Maintained constructive engagement with landowners and stakeholders, supporting smooth delivery across site boundary interfaces

  • Reduced programme risk through strong planning, supervision and responsive management of weather and access constraints

  • Provided Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water with a renewed main aligned to its wider Wales renewal initiative
